"But sunlight in the morning shows things as they are: it was faded and threadbare in that hard, steady light: as ruined as the dead thing inside it. I saw everything, that morning, clear as something you see in your childhood: like a vision of death."

    John Gardner, "The Sunlight Dialogues"

Dumb Love 04:23
we were out in the white, we were walking i sat still and serene when you walked in here i don’t want to wait, the sunlight in the morning betrays me i was always the strong one, you were waiting for someone we were waiting for rain i see all as it is in the morning, all the holes in the clothes that we’ve worn in here waiting the the day to decay and dissolve into darkness you were always the right one, holding onto to some dumb love and we were waiting for rain and it was always just the same thing i was out in the white, i was walking in the end, isn’t this what you wanted, dear? i don’t want to wait, the sunlight in the morning betrays me you said that life was a lump sum, i think it’s more like a ransom and we’re just waiting to pay and it was always just the same thing.

Sunlight 05:17
you can lay your claim to some dim town or some prized piece of land in the morning when you come around you’ll see me as i am a shell of what i was thought to be, an empty, broken man just a page to write your letters on, a quick flash in a pan the light shows all my flaws to you, it’s some simple sleight of hand and the tattered past that led to this will be displayed forevermore let me die inside a darkened room, let no one find me there let me fade into a thunderstorm or darken in the night a life that fades and disappears before the morning light because the dark hides all my flaws from you and the life that finally led to this will live forevermore.

every day is all black-topped & moving, asphalt heating and cooling, heat just hanging like fog a predetermined path through the ether, the yearly trek through the winter, repeating in time i was trying to draw this line darker, freeze us both in a picture like a sword in a stone let’s just sit here and look at each other & enjoy one another & the way that we are every night is a cloak we confide in, a brief pause to the grinding, eternal eye of the storm all time is determined and rolling, pushing forward & pulling, a predictable spin every morning is sharp-eyed & shining, a sun-soaked silver lining, we’re running in place all the mistakes we made in the evening, all the flaws in our upbringing are plain as the day you are a beacon of light on a dull day, the dark that descends every evening, the night & the day

All My Life 03:55
all my life i’ve been waiting for one small thing to happen every night, one more time & you thought it would end for real there’s nothing i can’t feel all my life i’ve been waiting on one small thing to happen every night, one more time & you thought it would end for real there’s nothing i can’t feel all my life, i’ve been waiting for one small thing to happen every night, one more time & you want it to end for real there’s nothing left to feel

in the photos from our hometowns the sun is swimming all around the winter a distant memory now, a past life that tries to drag us down i was there a thousand times, the sun-soaked collage of summertime stretching back to our past lives, captured & kept, immortalized the lingering scent of the summer nights around firepits & polaroids a dreamy, humid heat hangs light, i’m dreaming humid dreams tonight
